SIN

It’s Not All Eve’s Fault

Growing up, I completely believed that all sin originated with Eve listening to the serpent. That if only she would have not given in to the temptation of wanting the wisdom that came from eating of the fruit that hung on the Tree of Knowledge. In other words, she was deceived and then deceived Adam. That’s not totally true. Adam was certainly not deceived.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate

Genesis 3:6 ESV

Adam was with her. That means he knew what was going on and decided to eat of the fruit anyway His sin was both an act of conscious rebellion against God and a failure to carry out his responsibility to guard the garden and the woman that God had created as “a helper fit for him”. Adam had a choice and his actions had a hefty to price to pay: the fall of mankind, the beginning of every kind of sin, suffering, pain and physical and spiritual death for the human race.

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death

James 1:14-15 ESV

Sin is never God’s fault. God does not put obstacles in your way on the path to righteousness. It is people who reject God. When they do, they turn in on themselves and relationships are destroyed as well. Envy comes about when people are not happy with what God has given them, longing instead for what he has given others. Drunkenness and orgies are examples of how people misuse God’s good gifts in rebellion.

“I’m not perfect, I’m forgiven”

Bumper Sticker

We’ve all seen that bumper sticker. I’m not perfect. I’m forgiven! At first glance it seems cute, but truly it’s not. If you are forgiven, you have agreed to a covenant with the Lord that you will do what you can to live as Christian like as possible. That does not mean we are not human. As humans, we are fallible we make mistakes. What it means is when we make that mistake we get down and ask for forgiveness. Again. We do use our rebirth as a reason to keep doing what we’re doing because “Hey, we can’t get in trouble.” We try to do better.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”

Philippians 4:13 ESV
