Daniel W. Quinlan was one of 138 World War I veterans to receive the first Purple Heart medals ever issued. He enlisted when he was just 20 and served in the medical corps (actually the sanitary corp which was the precursor to the medical corps), injured in a poison gas attack and then braved heavy fire to help care for wounded men. That earned him a Silver Star. Daniel died in 1938 and somehow his family lost track of the purple heart. VIETNAM’S MEKONG RIVER DELTA IS SINKING!
Scientist have discovered that the Mekong Delta in Vietnam , the world’s third largest delta, is sinking at rate of 1 to 4.7 centimeters per year (roughly .39 to 1.5 inches a year.) The reason? Man made, of course. Ground water depletion from some 1 million wells and levees that prevent sediment from spilling out of rivers and collecting in the delta. Good news though, Vietnam and Dutch scientist are on it and have begun the Rise and Fall project. The project is a 5 year, million dollar effort to understand and develop strategies to reverse the sinking. Maybe they better hurry. In 5 years, the delta could have sunk 7.5 inches!
