Letters of Bud and Peg
My brother in law David came over the other day and brought me two old books. They were actually letters that my Father in law and mother in law wrote to each when they were apart. Much like a diary except the other could read it. They were apart for a bit because The Bear was in the Merchant Marines and set sail for a while. The books are fun to read but I also found a few pages of a dairy that Peggy my mother in law had written when she was a teenager and had moved here.
Peggy had bad asthma all her life and was moved to beautiful sunny California because of the weather. Here she met Bud or Bear. It was a challenge but she finally hooked him, they got married and the rest is history.
It is really interesting to read the entries. I do know these people, both deceased now, so some of what is written makes a lot of sense. Such as the entry that Buddy told Peggy that he was having trouble deciding between her and another girl, but that he really thought of Peg as pal. Well, both of them always said that they married their pals. I always thought it was one of those silly romantic things but nope, it is true.
Bud also gave Peg her first kiss. It was certainly another era. 1939 was. He gave her a kiss and instead of thinking, they were now an item, she was quite accepting of Bud having other girls. Even though she wanted him for herself. I guess he was quite the ladies’ man. He hung out with many of the other girls that were in the group that Peg was in.
She felt very unworthy of Bud as well. She did have pretty bad asthma and at that time, one was not too active with asthma. Not like today. Bud was very active and they would go to the beach or shore as the called and dive off the sea wall leaving Peg on the beach. In one entry, she laments the fact that she did not know how to show Buddy that she could do things as well.
I just started to read these entries and I am already fascinated. This is not a romance novel or a work of fiction from someone’s mind, this is real life. This is Pegs and Buddy’s life, or The Bear and Mom, as we called them. Some of those I have read have been very interesting. Peg was missing Bud very much and vice versa actually. Her writings are full of longing in the beginning as he left. Romantic and wishing he was home. She even felt bad for going to the show and having fun.
I can’t wait to read more and I will share some of the entries with you. I will be looking to see if Bud coded the entries he wrote as he did with his letters. In his letters the first letter of every sentence spelled out where he was in the pacific becuase it was war time and he could not just tell Peg. Maybe he coded his diary as well. We shall see.
